Born in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota 1934. Graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School in 1952 then attended Gustavus Adolphus College for a short time prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1953. After boot camp was ordered to Aviation Training School in Norman Oklahoma. Graduated and went to Air Controlman School in Olathe, Kansas. Was selected for Naval Academy Prep School in 1954. (Seaman to Admiral Program). Dropped out of the program prior to entering the Naval Academy and accepted an NROTC scholarship to the University of Minnesota. Graduated and was commissioned in 1959. Retired in 1985 as a Commander.
