George Allan Bates, 68, of Neponset, died at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, near Princeton as the result of a motorcycle accident.

Allan was born March 26, 1942 in Kewanee, the son of Laurance and Lola (Mear) Bates. Allan graduated from Neponset High School in 1960. He served in the Navy during the Viet Nam War from 1961-1964. He married Anna Holton on August 12, 1967 in Neponset.

She survives along with two sons Mike Bates of Princeton, Il., A.J. Bates and his fiancée Dena Hodge of Neponset, Il., two daughters Wendy(Steve) Helfrich of Riverside, Ca., Darci Bates and her fiancé James Bankes of Princeton, Il. grandchildren Eli, Lucas, Cole, Kyle, Halie, Marlee, Austin, Kelli, Maxwell, Mitchell and Liam, a sister Margaret Heise of Seal Beach, Ca. and a brother Don (Jean) Bates of Princeton, Il.

Allan was preceded in death by his parents, infant twin siblings and a sister Virginia Hepner and a brother John Bates.

Allan was a member of the Neponset Methodist Church, Neponset American Legion, Kewanee Hog Chapter and Tin Can Sailors.

Allan was a devoted husband, father, and papa who took pride in everything he did. He enjoyed spending time with his family, riding his Harley and pursuing his hot rod dreams. He touched all of our lives in many different ways. Family and friends will always have great memories and he will always be remembered as one of the greatest legends that came out of Neponset.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Pastor Dan Craig will officiate. Burial will be in the West Neponset Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. Wednesday, September 1st at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Buda Rescue Squad or the Neponset Methodist Church.
